Childhood trauma is a significant factor in the development of mental health disorders in adulthood. This paper explores the relationship between childhood trauma and the subsequent emergence of mental health issues in later life. Through a review of empirical studies, it is evident that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, have profound long-term effects on psychological and emotional well-being. The paper highlights the mechanisms through which childhood trauma impacts the brain and emotional regulation, discusses risk factors that may predispose individuals to these outcomes, and emphasizes the importance of early intervention and traumainformed care. It also identifies avenues for further research, including the need for longitudinal studies to fully understand the long-term impact of childhood trauma on adult mental health.
